The Meme as the Message
This book sheds light on the phenomenon of memes, covering everything from pandemic humour to far-right propaganda, from feminist memes to algorithmic censorship. Memes are far more than light entertainment - they are complex cultural artefacts that play a role in politics, in art, and in platform economics. Taking a cultural studies perspective, the authors analyse individual memes in entertaining case studies, systematising their findings in order to redefine this digital form of communication. Chapters connect memes with other digital phenomena such as trolling, and combine extensive close readings of exemplary individual memes with regards to form and aesthetics with an acute awareness of power dynamics and other context phenomena surrounding memes. The book develops an innovative theoretical approach that presents the term “memesis” to capture the very specific quality of meme production and reception as a form of collective creative rewriting of a template in accordance with algorithmic logic. Offering an important contribution not only to the still young field of meme studies but also to the general negotiations of questions around digital literacy, this book will interest not only scholars and students of digital media, visual communication, cultural studies, and media and politics but anyone with a keen interest in digital culture - and how it shapes our lives.
A Little Lie and Laughter-2
We had stunning personalities like former US President Mr. Roosevelt who could please others just by appreciating them and their belongings in one way or the other. He rose to the highest office on account of his jolly, fun and frolicking nature than by adopting political gimmicks and shrewdness. Whosoever would come into his contact was really pleased and impressed. Anyone and everyone can learn and apply this unique and valued humorous style, which delivers peace, ecstasy and amusement, creating a blissful and heavenly environment. Laughter contained in our respected William Shakespeare’s writings and a few others too strengthened my will to spread the mission of laughter globally, hence I penned down this second volume of A Little Lie and Laughter.
Memes, Monsters, and the Digital Grotesque
Author: Cristina Moreno-Almeida
language: en
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Release Date: 2024-05-16
Memes, Monsters, and the Digital Grotesque looks at the emerging and thriving new genre of digital horror from an innovative perspective. Examining digital cultural production during the period that has been referred to as the 'Arab Winter', Moreno-Almeida delves into the memes, animated cartoons, music videos, and expressive cultures — like fashion and urban subcultures — that emerged between 2016 and 2020. In revealing concealed narratives underlying the digital lives of artists, as well as ordinary people, Moreno-Almeida explores how memes, horror, and the grotesque capture a moment infused with political and affective significance, characterized by despair, alienation, and anomie, alongside opportunities for creative experimentation made possible in the postdigital era.
