This book addresses critical challenges for university renewal, and sketches critical issues in Hong Kong's higher education that have global implications. Contributors to the book were originally gathered for a conference funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) of Hong Kong, and took as their starting point the work of the Carnegie Foundation on The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. With the worldwide move towards public accountability, academics live in a climate of assessment and must constantly adapt to new pressures. This book presents a focus on leadership in learning, on the basis of which academics can reconcile pressures and paradoxes, transcend the system, and move on to a public domain where teaching and research can be integrated in scholarly discourse and practice. The shared professional insights, as articulated by the contributors to this book, will be most helpful to academics who are navigating through these turbulent waters. Emerging from the major thrusts of the selected papers are three thematic divisions: Critical and Creative Thinking, Motivation in Learning, and Collaboration in Teaching and Learning. The targeted readers include academics, administrators and policy-makers in higher education. The primary focus is on academics as teachers to whom the contributors can communicate authentically as frontline practitioners in an optimistic tone without being naive. Together, the chapters transcend local concerns, and contribute to a developing international discourse on the impact of scholarship of teaching on learning. Rather than advocating certain approaches from successful experiences, the book generates ideas for research into teaching, making transparent the dynamics of learning.
Creating Effective Learning Environments
Curriculum needs to be based on the strengths and needs of children. This information is gathered through careful observation and documentation and is one of the cornerstones of curriculum development. The purpose of this text is to take curriculum development to another level: to fill the gap between theory and practice. This text will help students to look at curriculum from the perspective of the child and to understand how that perspective is linked to learning and theory. This book is a documentation of individuals and groups of children learning over time. Each curriculum discussion starts with the real experiences that children have had. From these experiences, pertinent theory is woven in, explained and expanded.
Hearts and Minds Matter
Hearts and Minds Matter: Creating Learning Environments Where All Students Belong is an invaluable resource for all educational stakeholders, including teachers, school administrators, classroom support personnel, students and parents. The work is based on the understanding that human potential, given the right learning conditions, is boundless. In it, authors Jackie Eldridge and Denise McLafferty explore the many positive and necessary attributes of inclusion. To maximize a child’s potential, they must feel they belong to, and are in, a predictable learning environment. Only through inclusion and the creation and sustainability of a safe community can children survive, thrive, and become resilient adults. Grounded in research on human needs and wants, emotional intelligence, brain-compatible learning, and resilience, Hearts and Minds Matter: Creating Learning Environments Where All Students Belong provides educators with the foundation necessary to understand the power of belonging in safe, inclusive classrooms. This work provides a balance of theory and practice, with a wide variety of engaging strategies, tactics, and skills that can be immediately incorporated into the classrooms of today. The approach allows students to maximize their academic and social-emotional skills with trust and confidence. People can and will make a difference in the world, given optimal circumstances. Hearts and Minds Matter: Creating Learning Environments Where All Students Belong is here to help you build and sustain these conditions.
