MORPHOTECTONIC STUDIES AROUND SANGOLA GRAVITY HIGH FROM DECCAN VOLCANIC PROVINCE

1.1 PROLOGUE The bathyorthographical map of the Western Peninsular India including areas of Maharashtra and Northern Karnataka shows three distinct features from west to east, viz. Konkan Coastal Belt (KCB), Sahyadri Uplands and main Plateau (Fig. 1.1). These areas are mainly covered by nearly horizontally disposed basaltic lava flows of Deccan Traps of Upper Cretaceous to Eocene age. The main plateau region is known as Deccan Plateau, which comprises northern Maharashtra plateau and Karnataka plateau. It is bounded by Son-Narmada-Tapi Belt (SONATA) to its north while Konkan Coastal Belt (KCB) to its west, which are seismic belts of western India (Fig.1.2a). The later belt is southerly extension of Cambay rift which is trending NNW-SSE. This region was considered as most stable part of the Indian Peninsular Shield. The earthquakes of Koyna (1967; M, 6.7) and Killari (1993; M, 6.2) of Maharashtra have changed the view that the Deccan Plateau is undeformed and most stable part of the Indian Peninsular Shield. Both of these events are now considered as the result of intra-plate deformation and fall in Stable Continental Region (SCR) category (Rajendran and Rajendran, 2003).
