Manipulation

Gaslighting, flattery, misdirection, nagging, emotional blackmail, charm offensives, playing on emotions. These are all examples of ordinary manipulation. Such manipulation is common in everyday life, which is unfortunate, since manipulation seems like a bad thing. Manipulation: Its Nature, Mechanisms, and Moral Status answers three questions about manipulation: what is it, how does it work, and why is it bad? Addressing the first question requires us to find something that all forms of manipulation have in common, but which is not shared by other forms of influence. Robert Noggle argues that the common feature of all forms of ordinary manipulation is that they are mistake-inducing. This idea is the basis for the Mistake Account of manipulation, which defines manipulation as a kind of influence that operates by introducing a mistake into the mental states or processes of the person being influenced. To explain how manipulation works, this book explores the psychological levers that manipulators use to get us to make the mistakes that will get us to do what they want. These include various cognitive and decision-making biases, our tendency to choose the lesser good over the greater good when the lesser good is immediately available, and the simple fact that human reason is an imperfect thing. To explain why manipulation seems like a bad thing, Noggle first argues that, while manipulation is always presumptively immoral, it can be justified in extreme situations. He then shows that manipulation's presumptive immorality derives from the fact that it involves getting someone to make a mistake, and making a mistake is a bad thing. However, the most morally egregious instances of manipulation also have bad effects on well-being and autonomy. This book concludes by applying the Mistake Account to various influences, including priming, conditioning, nudges, advertising, sales, and online influences.
Why Governments and Parties Manipulate Elections
Author: Alberto Simpser
language: en
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Release Date: 2013-03-18
Why do parties and governments cheat in elections they cannot lose? This book documents the widespread use of blatant and excessive manipulation of elections and explains what drives this practice. Alberto Simpser shows that, in many instances, elections are about more than winning. Electoral manipulation is not only a tool used to gain votes, but also a means of transmitting or distorting information. This manipulation conveys an image of strength, shaping the behavior of citizens, bureaucrats, politicians, parties, unions and businesspeople to the benefit of the manipulators, increasing the scope for the manipulators to pursue their goals while in government and mitigating future challenges to their hold on power. Why Governments and Parties Manipulate Elections provides a general theory about what drives electoral manipulation and empirically documents global patterns of manipulation.
Manipulation
What is manipulation, how is it used in our everyday lives, and why is it such a prevalent force in our society? Whether you consciously realize it or not, you use this tactic and have it used on you very often. Although some people have a negative association with the word, it isn’t always a bad thing, and can in fact help you a lot in life. Here are some of the concepts you will learn about in this book: Automatic Mental Processes: Every single human on the planet has been conditioned to behave in certain ways as a response to particular stimuli. This is what makes us suggestible to influence and manipulation. Once you understand this process, you can use it to your benefit, and also to protect yourself from others. Positive vs. Negative Manipulation: There are different types of manipulation, some which are beneficial to all involved, and others which are harmful and detrimental. In this book, you will learn to tell the difference between the two. The Benefits of Positive Manipulation: Ethical manipulation, also known as persuasion or influence, is one of the most important social skills you can develop. When you master this, an entire new world opens up to you professionally, personally, and otherwise.
